The Bible - It Ain’t Just Some Book

God & Coffee - Jesus In My Cup

Bow Ya Head…

Dear Lord, thank You. Thank You for last night’s laying down and this morning’s rise. Please forgive us for our sins so that this prayer can be heard. Thank You for the gift of Your Word. As we come together to study, reflect, and meditate on it, open our hearts and minds. Completely empty us, and then fill us with Your Spirit. Help us to understand the Scriptures as You intended, and show us how to apply them in our daily lives.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

As Believers, We All know the Bible matters—it’s not just any book. But here’s the question: why aren’t we spending more time reading and studying it? Are we really that busy? Do we use the excuse that it’s too hard to understand?

I can’t answer those questions for you, but I can definitely answer them for myself.

Robin, why aren’t you spending more time reading and studying?
Because I have let the noisiness of life take over, which has caused my anxious behavior, making me feel like I have to prioritize everything else with an, “If I don’t do it, it won’t get done” mentality. And don’t get me started on the topic of social media! Picking up my phone first thing in the morning is an entirely different conversation.

Robin, are you really that busy?
No. I mean, I can make it look like I’m that busy, but at the end of the day, I know it’s just organized chaos to keep me distracted from making the main thing the main thing.

Robin, do you think the Bible is too hard to understand?
At times, yes. But I can no longer use that as an excuse because it’s 2024, and there are tons of resources and translations available to assist with my learning. And… my pastor is my “Boo-Thang,” so there’s that!

Okay, now it’s your turn. Run these questions through your mind and be honest with yourself. What are you making a priority in your life?

Let’s Get Into The Word…

2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV

(16) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Breathed Out By God

Every word written in the Bible was guided, directed, and orchestrated by God. The phrase “breathed out by God” emphasizes the divine origin and authority of Scripture. The Bible contains the very words of God, revealing His nature and character while providing us with instructions on how to live this life.

Good For Teaching

How can we know if we’re not taught? We need to study the Word to grasp its teachings. It holds the truths of this life and has repeatedly proven itself to be a reliable resource. When we have questions, Scripture provides the answers. Neglecting to study the Bible and then attempting to navigate life is a setup for failure—it's like taking a test without studying. Dedicating ourselves to studying will help ensure we lead a godly, Christlike life. These teachings illuminate what is right and what is wrong, guiding us on how we should and should not live.

Good For Reproof

Now, here’s where things get a bit deeper. Scripture is valuable for reproof; it’s like holding a mirror up to your face, reflecting who you really are. It reveals your sin and shows you the wrongs you’ve committed and the wrongs you might still be doing. As tough and painful as it may be, this process is essential for spiritual growth—those necessary growing pains.

Good For Correction

Maya Angelou once said that when we know better, we do better. After we’ve been taught and confronted our imperfections, it’s time to make some changes. It’s about dying to your old self and becoming new—living by a new standard, a standard of truth.

Good for Training in Righteousness

Training isn’t a one-time event. Anyone who works out regularly knows that taking a break can make it tough to get back in the groove. Consistent exercise builds strength and endurance, pushing you to new heights—both physically and mentally. The same principle applies to Scripture. We need to train ourselves by regularly reading and studying God’s Word. This practice will strengthen us and help us grow in righteousness. Life will throw its challenges our way, and remember, Satan and his minions don’t take breaks, so neither should we!

God breathed scripture + teaching + reproof + correction + training = completion, ready for every good work.

The Bible Isn’t Just a book we read; it’s the roadmap for life, containing the very words of God.

How can you prioritize Bible study in your daily life? Really think about that. Here is something that I’ve started to implement.

My timer is set for 5 AM - daily. It’s the perfect time for me because everyone is still asleep. The house is quiet. It’s just me, God, my coffee, and the sounds of nature just before the sun rises. And even when I am dog-tired with the crust still in my eyes, I put on my glasses and push through because I am tired of operating in organized chaos.

Bow Ya Head…

Lord, thank You for reminding us of the power and importance of Your Word. Help us to make Bible reading a regular part of our lives, not just something we turn to in times of trouble or on Sunday mornings. Let it shape our hearts and guide our steps as we seek to live for You.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
