Let’s Get Into This Mirror Work
Friday Reflections
Welcome to the Friday Reflections section of SheIsQuiet!
Mirror work is a practice where you look at yourself in the mirror and speak positive affirmations and encouraging words with the goal of developing self-love, acceptance, and healing. It was popularized by motivational speaker and author Louise Hay, who believed that this practice could be a powerful source of healing and compassionate self-reflection.
I know it sounds a little cringy, but next time you're alone, try it. Look yourself in the eyes and say: “I love myself. I am powerful. I believe in myself. I deserve good things in my life.” It’s harder than you think, because your reflection is more than just what you see on the surface.
Self-reflection may be the hardest thing we’ll ever do. You can affirm yourself all day long, but beyond the surface are the demons you fight, the fear that haunts you, the trauma and pain you’ve experienced in this life. I’m not saying mirror work isn’t effective; anything done repeatedly over time can manifest change. But let’s be real: you’ll need more than just pretty words to combat the deep layers of your inner being.
We need scripture…
For some believers, it’s easy to read scripture and point fingers. It’s easy to shout when the preacher’s preaching prosperity and saying, “Tell your haters!” cliches. But it’s a different challenge to hold the mirror up to your own face and peer into your soul through the lens of scripture.
I’ve been on my own mirror work journey for a while now—since 2015, to be exact. Yo-yoing my way through therapy, prayer, studying God’s word, avoiding, running, addiction… you name it. It’s by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and I’m not done yet. Instead of calling it mirror work, I call it my “valley of the shadow of death.”
The only way to get to the other side is to face the darkest parts of yourself. You’ll never truly appreciate Heaven until you’ve been through Hell - figuratively speaking.
This section of She Is Quiet is very personal to me because I’m sharing my own reflective journey—past, present, and future—which leads into my baby, She Is Quiet: The Memoir.
Well, that was deep. Come on back into the light with me. I promise this section won’t always be this heavy, but we will keep it real.
